The Latin root words that form the
word compassion translate as "suffer with."
Jesus was the perfect example of one with authentic compassion. He truly
suffered with those who were suffering, in a way that normal people could not:
Matthew 9:36: When he saw the crowds, he had compassion
on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a
shepherd.
Matthew
20:34 “Jesus had compassion on them and touched their eyes. Immediately they
received their sight and followed him.”
Although Jesus’ examples of
compassion should be enough motivation for us to do likewise, consider that scientific
research has demonstrated real, tangible feelings of pleasure are triggered in parts of the brain of those who help others. Other research
has shown that humans are much more connected to others than we consciously are
aware of, and hat we have a natural
capacity for empathy.
When one part helps and
serves another, both benefit!
